Artist Statement
When someone randomly takes a picture of me, I feel trapped. A photograph captures a moment in time. No two photographs will be taken at the same exact time and day with the same image shown. A photo makes us feel caged behind glass with no way to escape. It creates a barrier between two people. This barrier is known as a lens.
One photograph can capture everything. It can capture us at our best and our worst. It can make us look at ourselves differently or other people. It makes us feel differently about others. I wrote words on the side of the person to show how they are slowing being chipped away by these photographs. The word forgotten has “ten” underlined because it means the person had ten friends but the friends forgot about her. On the other side of the person is the number 5. It represents how many friends they have now and also by the five fingers the girl is holding up
The frame around the window I kept to make it look like the person was literally trapped behind something. Without the frame, it’s hard to tell what is going on. The frame also helps to see the words better. Without the frame the words would be hard to read. This represents a lot of high school students that have lost friends based on pictures posted online.
