Artist Statement
Why do people feel the need to leave a part of themselves behind? That part of themselves they leave behind is usually reflected by objects. It can be objects that hold sentimental value that they pass on from generation to generation. Something to be remembered by? What if it’s not an object that is special, but money? Is money special enough to be passed down and remembered by? Would someone trade their special object they were given for money?
Stuffed animals are commonly given to babies when they are born. Something for them to hold when they are asleep. When I was born I was given a stuffed animal bunny and I still have it today sitting at the top of my bed. I consider this item precious to me. The thought of interchanging it with money seems absurd to me, but others could think otherwise. That’s why I showed a stuffed animal holding money.
The idea of cutting open a stuffed animal and stuffing money in it saddens me, so I made the picture look like an exchange. The stuffed animal is reaching out to trade itself away with money. It’s up to the person looking at the picture to decide if it’s a good trade.
