Final Picture

Artist Statement

What if a mask doesn’t have to be something tied tightly around someone’s face, but instead be something that temporarily blocks someone’s view? Parents constantly like to think they know exactly what their children are doing. Where they are going? What do they like to do? However, what if their kid is in front of them and they are too blind to see what is going on?

My photograph depicts a little kid cutting their hair in front of her father. The father is unaware what is going on and the little kid is just doing what they want. When I was younger I stole a pair of scissors and went into my room and cut my hair. It went unnoticed until my mom yelled that my hair wasn’t even and then tried to fix it herself.

I first took the picture with the parent looking through a cabinet and the little kid cutting their hair, but it didn’t show the parent being unaware. It just showed them temporarily distracted by getting a glass of water. Also, the background was too distracting. I retook the picture focusing on the people and cropped out most of the background. It got my point across better: Instead of asking questions, pay more attention.
